Awaiting Celebration

Her story

Angelina Napolitano killed her abusive husband in Canada in 1911. She was sentenced to death; the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Her case prompted public debate about domestic violence, women’s resistance, and the death penalty.

Why we recognize her

Her story asks what justice overlooks when a woman’s resistance is separated from the violence she endured.

Her canonization will be completed through communal celebration and ritual.

Recognition does not declare every act morally perfect, imply endorsement or membership, or promote violence. The church’s theological interpretation is distinct from the historical record.
