Awaiting Celebration

Her story

In 1977, after years of domestic abuse, Francine Hughes killed her abusive ex-husband. She was acquitted by reason of temporary insanity. Her story became The Burning Bed and helped bring domestic violence into public conversation. She died in 2017.

Why we recognize her

Her story calls us to build the practical community support survivors need before crisis—and to listen when someone asks for help.

Her canonization will be completed through communal celebration and ritual.

Recognition does not declare every act morally perfect, imply endorsement or membership, or promote violence. The church’s theological interpretation is distinct from the historical record.
